Poster, canvas or framed print

A poster is the cheapest way onto a wall, but it arrives unframed, and a decent frame in the right size can cost more than the print. Pick the frame size first and the poster second.

A canvas hangs as it comes. The print is stretched over a wooden frame and wraps round the edges, so there is no glass to catch the light and not much weight to carry. The weave softens small text and fine lines a little, which is why photographs and bold work suit it best.

A framed print sits behind glass, often with a card mount around it. It keeps every edge sharp and lets you swap the print later. It is heavier, though, and it reflects: keep it off the wall opposite a window unless the glass is anti-reflective.

The room usually decides, more than taste does. The long version, room by room: Canvas print or framed print: which one for which wall.

Before you order

Measure first. Three numbers cover most walls: the centre of the picture about 145 cm from the floor, 15 to 25 cm of space above a sofa, and a width of about two thirds of the sofa. The reasoning, and what to do above a bed or a sideboard: How high to hang a picture, and how big it should be.

About the prices

We do not sell anything. Each price is the shop's own, and the price on the shop's page is the one you pay. Some links are affiliate links: if you buy after clicking one, the shop pays us a commission and your price stays the same.
